WHAT YOU NEED
- Hacksaw or metal saw with fine teeth
- Staple gun
- Protective gloves and possibly safety glasses
- Sandpaper or file
- Marker pen or tape
STEP 1: REMOVE THE GRIP AND END CAP
Start by removing the grip tape. Loosen the tape at the end and carefully roll off the grip. Then remove the end cap, which is attached with staples. Heat it if necessary and remove it without damaging the plastic.
STEP 2: DETERMINE IDEAL LENGTH
Place the stick vertically beside you. A good rule of thumb is that the top should be somewhere between the navel and chest. Shorter sticks give faster ball control, while longer sticks provide better reach and power.
STEP 3: MARK THE CUTTING POINT
Use a pen or tape to mark where you want to cut the shaft. Double-check the measurement before starting.
STEP 4: SECURE THE SHAFT
Secure the shaft in a vise or with a clamp. Protect the surface with a cloth to avoid marks. Make sure it is firmly fixed.
STEP 5: CUT THE SHAFT
Use the hacksaw for a straight and clean cut. Saw slowly and steadily along your marking. Keep the saw straight for the best result.
STEP 6: SMOOTH THE EDGES
After cutting, the edge may be uneven. Sand it with sandpaper or a file until it is smooth. This prevents damage to grip and end cap.
STEP 7: ATTACH THE END CAP
If the knob fits, put it back on and staple it again. If it doesn’t fit, you can trim it or use a new knob/plug adapted to the shaft’s diameter.
STEP 8: PUT ON THE GRIP TAPE
Rewrap the old grip tape or use a new one. Start at the knob and wrap downward. Wrap tightly and evenly for the best grip.
TIPS!
CUT IN SMALL STEPS
If you are unsure, cut less at first. You can always shorten more but never lengthen the shaft again.
ADAPT TO PLAYING STYLE
Offensive players often choose shorter sticks, while defensive players prefer longer ones for reach.
THINK ABOUT SAFETY
Use safety glasses and gloves to avoid accidents during the work.
